Vatican issues 10 Commandments for Drivers (!?)

story.vatican.ap.jpg Yes, I thought it was a joke too.  In fact, it kind of reminds me of the top ten countdown on Dave Letterman!  But the Vatican is serious on this “issue”, and deemed it necessary that they have a press conference to announce to the world the 10 commandments of driving.  We all know that driving is dangerous, and we’ve been hearing the safety banter since the model T was cruising the streets at whopping speeds, but I think it is a bit humorous that The Vatican is doing its part to subdue road rage.

I guess the list doesn’t hurt.  I mean, I suppose they could help.  But I doubt it, most people have a hard time remember what the REAL 10 commandments are!  (Quick – try to name them all).  Nonetheless, I don’t think that the eager teenager will “recite the Roserey” before kickin’ it in their birthday ride.

So the moment you have been waiting for…here is the totally comprehensive list, life enhancing, 10 commandments of driving brought to you by God, er…I mean the Vatican.

1. You shall not kill.

2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.

3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.

4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.

5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.

6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.

7. Support the families of accident victims.

8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.

9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.

10. Feel responsible toward others.

  1. As a Catholic, I think this was a great idea. It’s a disarming way to get peoples to listen to their spiritual leaders, whom they often regard as “far away” and unable to connect with their personal, everyday challenges and needs. Furthermore, a document such as this is highly needed given the growing level of traffic on the world’s roads today as well as the prevalence of less-than-safe driving, even among Christians.
