NRA: Give Terrorists Their Guns

The National Rifle Association (NRA) is against a new proposed bill that would reject gun ownership to suspected terrorists.  Is this a violation of the Second Amendment?  Some think so.

Firearm legislation has been popping up all over in wake of the Virginia Tech shootings.  As a result, bitter words are being exchanged between pro and anti gun activists.  As of now, “Current law requires gun dealers to conduct a criminal background check and deny sales if a gun purchaser falls under a specified prohibition, including a felony conviction, domestic abuse conviction or illegal immigration. There is no legal basis to deny a sale if a purchaser is on a terror watch list.” (CNN)

Should a suspect terrorist be allowed to purchase a gun?  Well, certainly an argument can be made for both sides.  What irritates me is when I hear arguments with no statistical support.  A good pro-gun argument I heard the other day was on 20/20 (I believe, either that or a show like dateline).  They found that since guns were outlawed in Washington DC, actual crimes committed withguns increased.  I know that I found that bit of information surprising.

However, I always have wondered about the Second Amendment and how it came to be – so, I did a little research.  In my review of the history of the Amendment, I found that the main reason that it was added to the Constitution was because it was once thought that a militia was the best/strongest fighting force.  In addition to this, the ability to posses firearms gave the people protection from the government (specifically, the U.S. military).  This concept was based on the lesson our founding fathers’ learned from England’s turbulent history with Protestants.  In other words, early settlers feared creation of a standing army that could eventually endanger democracy and civil liberties.  The argument that arises is that neither of these concerns is plausible today given that unorganized militias were replaced with the formalized National Guard and simply owning a rifle will provide hardly any protection from the advanced military.

Will actually legislation be passed that relates to the Second Amendment?  Will suspect terrorists be allowed to purchase firearms?  These questions are soon to be answered by Congress.

  1. Iraq has proved that old weapons can be used with affect against a modern military.

‘‘The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subjected people to carry arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subjected peoples to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non [“something essential” lit. “without which not”] for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let’s not have any native militia or police.’’

  2. The point of our law system is innocent until proven guilty. Felons must break a current set of laws first however looking out of place to an FBI agent isnt a crime and to be on that list you never have to be convicted of a crime.

  3. To me I believe that the government them selfs are getting a little powerhungry in there search for Democarcy because there trying to wre-write the Constituton and pass new laws that disable people from foriegn countries to purchase guns or someone that is suspected of a crime something so simple will take away are rights and ban us from doing what we did for century’s now is a total disgrace to the people and someone needs to stand up to these people in power that think there so powerful what is there to be afraid of getting arrested for speaking are thoughts NO stand up for your rights and be heard do something about it!!!

  4. if you are a Christian (like i am) you probably believe that the end times are imenent. i like most people i know believe that the rapture will be pre- tribulation…but what if it is not? what if all the Christians are stuck here on earth while the entire earth is communist? would you not like a gun to protect yourself? there is a possiblitity that the united states could turn communist before that even. i believe that the second amendment is very important. if the government took away guns from the public it would be a giant step towards communism. as hitler said,

the founding fathers knew what they were doing when they made this amendment. in the united states we there are no subject people. we all rule the country by voting. so there fore we all should be able to possess and bear arms

  5. Hi Jake,
I do believe that end times are imenent – but as Jesus says, “No one knows the day nor the Hour, only the Father in Heaven”. In short, it could be during our lifetime, or years in the future… no one really knows. In fact, Paul believed he was the last generations…and since then every single generation has felt the same. That being said, being aware is part of Christianity and should be held close to the heart (a sense of urgency is apparent within the Gospels).

My next installment of “Christianity’s Downfall” will address this to an extent, although not exactly the tenets of the end times (but rather the ministry of it).
